Four people, including three farmers and a herder, were killed in separate attacks in Plateau State's Barkin Ladi and Riyom Local Government Areas. The farmers were attacked Sunday night in Pwomol village, Heipang District, Barkin Ladi LGA, while the herder was ambushed Monday morning in Jol community, Riyom LGA. Rwang Tengwong, spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), confirmed the attack on the farmers, stating that vigilante youths on watch were targeted and one person was injured and is receiving hospital treatment. Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, National President of BYM, condemned the killings and urged security agencies to conduct a transparent investigation.
The herder's death was confirmed by Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), who said the man was ambushed with his younger brother, who escaped. Babayo reported the incident to the DSS and the commander of Operation Safe Haven, stating the body was recovered from Sector 6, Makera, in Riyom LGA. Both BYM and MACBAN denied responsibility for attacks on the other's members. Capt. Polycap Oteh, spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace, said he would respond after clarification but had not done so by press time. The violence follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's visit to Plateau last week after 28 were killed in Jos North.
President Tinubu's pledge of no repeat attacks rings hollow just days after 28 deaths and now four more killings in Plateau. The fact that both Berom and Fulani groups are trading blame without consequences shows the cycle of violence continues unchecked. For Nigerians in conflict-prone areas, promises from the presidency mean little without verifiable security on the ground. The repeated breakdown in peace efforts suggests that current interventions are failing to reach the root of the crisis.
