Nine people were killed when armed men attacked Mbalom community in Gwer-East Local Government Area of Benue State. The assault occurred in broad daylight at a market in Jande Mbatsada, during the Easter period. One person was critically injured in the incident. The attackers, described as herdsmen, invaded the community and opened fire on residents before fleeing the scene. Local sources confirmed the fatalities and the severity of the injury. Alia, a local official, condemned the attack and pledged that efforts would be intensified to protect lives and property in the area. No group has claimed responsibility for the violence. Security forces have been deployed to the community to restore order and prevent further bloodshed.
Alia's vow to protect lives rings hollow when such attacks occur in daylight with no immediate security response. Nine deaths in Mbalom point to a persistent failure to secure rural communities in Benue. If armed invasions of markets go unchecked, public confidence in safety and governance will keep eroding. For residents, every market day now carries the risk of becoming a massacre.
