The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB), has begun the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) for the 138km Alaoji–Onitsha 330kV transmission line upgrade. This includes land acquisition and clearing of the Right of Way (RoW) necessary for reconstructing the existing single-circuit line into a double-circuit system. The project aims to improve power evacuation from generation sources in the south to consumers in the north. TCN's General Manager, System Operations, Sule Abdulaziz, confirmed the commencement of field activities, adding that affected communities would be compensated in line with approved guidelines. The upgrade is part of broader efforts to strengthen the national grid and reduce transmission losses.
Sule Abdulaziz's confirmation of compensation for affected landowners contrasts with past delays in similar projects, suggesting a shift toward more accountable infrastructure development. The Alaoji–Onitsha line upgrade, once completed, could significantly reduce power bottlenecks between southern generation hubs and northern demand centres. For Nigerian households and businesses, this may translate into more stable electricity supply—if execution remains on track.
