Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has announced plans to decentralise electricity supply, targeting 100 megawatts (MW) of power for Edo Central. He made the declaration at the 52nd Annual Convention of the Uromi Community Association of Nigeria in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area. Citing persistent power instability from the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, Okpebholo said electricity remains a critical challenge for residents and businesses. "The issue of electricity is very important because it has become a problem for us as a people," he stated.
He confirmed that his administration had already launched a 100MW power project in Benin City and intends to replicate it in Edo Central. The initiative aims to improve electricity access across the three senatorial districts. Okpebholo linked his administration's progress to support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, crediting him for the achievements in the first year in office. He said he had advised Tinubu not to campaign in Edo State but to return only for project commissionings.
The Ojuoromi of Uromi, Anselm Edenojie II, raised concerns over the abandoned Ahojie Township Stadium, stressing that sports and recreation are vital for youth development. Okpebholo reaffirmed his commitment to completing critical infrastructure and expanding power supply.
Monday Okpebholo's push for 100MW in Edo Central reveals a shift from reliance on national grid performance to state-led energy solutions. If executed, this could reduce business downtime in Esan and surrounding areas, where power instability has long stifled growth.
