Two fire outbreaks in Lagos were contained overnight in Agege and Yaba, with no casualties reported. The first incident occurred at 10:46 p.m. on Friday at Tower Aluminum Village along Abeokuta Expressway in Dopemu, Agege. Firefighters from Ikeja and Agege stations responded to the blaze, which damaged multiple offices and stores within a commercial complex spanning approximately 2,592 square metres on a four-acre plot. Swift action prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent structures.
A second fire broke out at 3:15 a.m. on Sunday in a three-storey commercial building on Oyabiyi Street in Yaba, opposite the NLC office. The building housed several shops stocked with textile materials, which contributed to the intensity of the flames. Crews from Somolu, Ilupeju, and Sari Iganmu fire stations were deployed and managed to contain the fire before it reached nearby buildings. Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that both incidents were brought under control without loss of life.
Controller General Margaret Adeseye emphasized the need for strict adherence to fire safety practices, particularly among businesses handling flammable goods. Investigations into the causes of both fires are ongoing.
Fire outbreaks in high-density commercial areas like Agege and Yaba are not new, yet the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is still reacting instead of leading on prevention. Margaret Adeseye's call for vigilance rings hollow without enforced safety standards or inspections. If nothing changes, it is not a matter of if but when a fire will overwhelm the system. For now, Lagos dodged disaster by relying on emergency crews, not policy.
