Abubakar Bawa Kalgo, former Secretary of the Kebbi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has confirmed plans by the state's party executives to resign en masse over allegations of internal compromise. Speaking in Birnin Kebbi on Monday, Kalgo said the decision followed what he described as the party's betrayal of its opposition role, claiming the PDP in Kebbi had been "sold." The executives initially boycotted a factional convention that produced Kabiru Tanimu Turaki due to a subsisting court order. They later participated in a separate convention linked to Nyesom Wike, believing it to be legally sound.
Kalgo said their participation was in good faith after confirming no legal barrier existed. However, their confidence eroded when Wike publicly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Kalgo stated the endorsement revealed a broader alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) among those elected. "We were shocked when Wike openly endorsed President Tinubu," he said. "Initially, we thought it was his personal position, but we later discovered that many of those elected at the convention shared the same alignment." He stressed that such alignment contradicts the core function of an opposition party.
All PDP executives in Kebbi, from the chairman down, have agreed to resign together. Kalgo said the group is now exploring alternative political platforms to oppose the APC-led government. The crisis adds to ongoing turmoil within the PDP, which faces factional disputes and legitimacy challenges in multiple states.
Nyesom Wike's endorsement of Bola Ahmed Tinubu has become a political wrecking ball, and Abubakar Bawa Kalgo's resignation shows it is now clearing out opposition ranks. When a state executive committee collectively quits over alignment with the ruling party, it signals collapse, not strategy. For Nigerian voters wanting credible opposition, the PDP's implosion in Kebbi offers more disillusionment than surprise.
