Ghanaian students have taken the top three spots in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, outperforming peers from The Gambia, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. The results were announced at the 74th Annual Council Meeting of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), held from March 24 to 28, 2026, at the International Conference Centre in Accra. A total of 2,612,830 candidates sat for the exam across the five participating countries. Miss Huda Suglo Suleman emerged as the overall best candidate in West Africa and received the Augustus Bandele Oyediran Award for Best Candidate in the sub-region. She was followed by Miss Paula Adzo Elinam Sowu in second place and Miss Matthea Aba Andoh in third.
Demianus Ojijeogu, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters in Ghana, confirmed the results in a statement. Ghana's Chief Government Nominee, Prof. Ernest Davis, was elected Vice Chairman of the WAEC Council for a one-year term, succeeding Amos Fully of Liberia. Ghana's Vice President, Jane Opoku-Agyemang, represented President John Dramani Mahama at the event. In a keynote address, Mahama praised WAEC's 74 years of service but warned that rising examination malpractice threatens the council's credibility. "The plethora of fraudsters ready to falsify results and alter certificates poses a serious risk to WAEC's mandate," he said.
The Ghana Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, represented by Dr. Clement Apaak, emphasized the role of exams in national development and announced Ghana's return to the international version of WASSCE starting in 2026. WAEC honoured Prof. William Asomaning of Ghana as a Distinguished Friend of the Council. Professor George K. T. Oduro delivered the 31st Annual Endowment Fund Lecture on assessment integrity. Nigeria will host the 75th WAEC Annual Council Meeting in March 2027.
