Displaced Tiv people from Wukari Local Government Area in Taraba State have held a peaceful protest against their extended stay in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. Many of the demonstrators, who are primarily farmers, said they have lived in the camps for years without adequate support or resolution. They demanded justice for past attacks and safe passage to return to their ancestral communities. The protesters appealed to the federal government and the international community to step in and address their plight.
The displacement stems from recurring clashes between farmers and herders in the region, which have forced thousands from their homes over the past decade. Living conditions in the camps have been described as poor, with limited access to healthcare, education, and farming tools. Despite previous assurances, no concrete plan has been implemented to facilitate their return or resettlement. Some camp residents said they are tired of depending on handouts and want to resume productive lives.
The federal government has known about the Taraba IDP crisis for years, yet people remain stranded in squalid camps with no clear path home. The fact that displaced farmers are still appealing to the international community shows how little domestic action has been taken. This inertia undermines trust in state institutions, especially as similar displacement crises linger across the Middle Belt. For Nigerians in affected areas, empty appeals and silence from authorities have become the norm, not the exception.
