Former Kwara State Commissioner for Finance, Hon. Florence Olasumbo Oyeyemi, has declared her candidacy for the House of Representatives seat representing the Ekiti/Irepodun/Isin/Oke-Ero Federal Constituency. The announcement was made in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area, during a political gathering attended by key party figures and stakeholders. Oyeyemi, who served as the APC's campaign spokesperson in Kwara during the 2023 general elections, pledged inclusive governance and improved representation for women and all residents in the constituency.
She emphasized merit, grassroots connection, and proven capacity as guiding principles for her campaign. "Inclusive governance is key to sustainable development. I am committed to strengthening women's representation across all programmes and initiatives, guided by merit, proven capacity, track record, and strong grassroots connections," she said. On security, she proposed a community-based security vanguard to complement national efforts. She also promised digital skills training in cybersecurity, data science, AI, and software development to boost youth employment.
Supporters, including Mrs. Angel Adelaja of the City Boy Movement and APC Elder Prince Shuaib Olanrewaju, endorsed her bid, citing federal gender inclusion policies and rotational equity in leadership. Eleven aspirants are reportedly vying for the seat.
A former state commissioner stepping into a federal race isn't unusual, but Florence Olasumbo Oyeyemi's direct link to the APC's 2023 campaign machinery gives her a structural advantage over other aspirants. Her focus on digital skills and community security taps into real voter concerns, but such promises have been made before with little follow-through. If elected, her access to networks in Abuja and the current administration may translate to faster project delivery than typical first-time lawmakers. Then again, influence doesn't always mean results—especially in a constituency with long-standing infrastructural deficits.
