Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu have been elected as the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), respectively. The election was a result of a consensus reached by the party members at the 2026 national convention held at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Sunday.
\nProminent party members who attended the convention included former governors Sule Lamido, Bukola Saraki, and Ahmed Makarfi. The convention was attended by over 2,000 delegates, according to the Chairman of the convention planning committee, Okezie Ikpeazu.
\nMinister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who is the national leader of the party, expressed optimism about the party's future. He assured the delegates that the PDP would be on the ballot for the 2027 general elections.
\nWike emphasized the importance of inclusiveness in rebuilding the party. He commended the delegates for demonstrating good character and resilience in the face of adversity.
\nThe convention marked a significant step in the party's efforts to heal and move forward after a period of internal crisis.
\nThe election of Abdulrahman Mohammed as PDP National Chairman and Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary is a significant step towards healing the party's internal wounds. However, the road to recovery will be long and arduous, especially considering the party's history of factionalism. Nyesom Wike's leadership and commitment to inclusiveness will be crucial in rebuilding the party's fortunes. The PDP's ability to contest the 2027 general elections will be a major test of its strength and resilience. If the party can put its internal differences aside and work towards a common goal, it may yet have a chance to regain its former glory.
