The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) extended Easter greetings to Christians nationwide, marking the occasion with a call for compassion and national unity. SWAN President Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, in a statement issued through the Association's Secretary-General on Sunday, described the resurrection of Jesus Christ as a symbol of sacrifice, love, and heartfelt compassion. He urged Nigerians to embrace the spirit of the season, saying, "May this sacred season bring us redemption, good news, upliftment, and new beginnings, in Jesus' mighty name." Benjamin linked the values of Easter to national development, particularly in the sports sector.
Benjamin encouraged athletes, administrators, sporting media, and political and religious leaders to recommit to advancing sports in Nigeria. He stated that elevating sports could address broader societal challenges, adding, "When Sports is given its pride of place, the issues regarding employment, social welfare, insecurity among others will be a thing of the past." He emphasized that empowering communities through sports contributes to poverty reduction and long-term societal transformation. "So when Sports thrive, everyone partakes in the benefit, therein," he said.
A sports association issuing Easter greetings is routine, but SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin framing athletic development as a solution to national insecurity and poverty shifts the conversation. His assertion that thriving sports can eliminate unemployment and social welfare gaps suggests a belief that stadiums and pitches are more vital than policy. For Nigerians, this reflects a growing reliance on non-governmental sectors to fix systemic failures. Whether sports alone can deliver such outcomes, however, remains unproven.
