Shettiman Dukawuya at 30: A Life of Education and Service
Thirty years ago, a child named Gidado was born in the ancient community of Dukawuya in Kano, a historic gateway that once defended Kano against foreign invaders. Dukawuya is a unique community, completely encircled by institutions of learning, earning it the reputation as the Centre of Education in Kano. Gidado's educational journey began in two worlds, attending a Christian school in Abuja in the mornings and a traditional Almajiri-style setting in the afternoons. This early exposure to diversity defined his worldview, shaping his sense of responsibility and curiosity. He went on to attend several schools, including Command Secondary School, Alhaji Akilu Islamic School, and Nigeria-Ghana College, each leaving its imprint on his life.
Gidado's academic performance improved steadily, and he gained admission into Bayero University Kano (BUK) to study Sociology and Mass Communication. However, his studies were interrupted by the Boko Haram insurgency, and his parents relocated him to Baze University, Abuja, for his safety. He later graduated with a Second Class Upper degree and went on to earn a Masters degree in Media Campaigning and Social Change from the University of Westminster in London. Gidado's career spans impactful roles in leading media organisations, including PREMIUM TIMES, Daily Trust, and BBC London. He has also worked as a Social Media Coordinator, Chief Communication Adviser, and Special Assistant to the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria.
Shettiman Dukawuya's story is a testament to the power of education in shaping lives. Born and raised in Kano, Dukawuya's connection to three regions, three cultures, and generations of history is a unique blend of tradition and modernity. As he celebrates his 30th birthday, it is clear that his passion for digital journalism and communication has taken him far, but his roots remain firmly planted in his community. This is a story that resonates with everyday Nigerians, who are constantly seeking to make a difference in their communities.
