The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Federal Government of orchestrating moves to destabilise the party after Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso's defection. National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi stated that pressure is being exerted on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, to dissolve the party's leadership. The ADC claims this follows Kwankwaso's recent departure to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which it says has triggered targeted actions against its structure. Abdullahi insisted the party remains united and warned that any attempt to dissolve its elected officials would be illegal and resisted. He called on INEC to disregard external influence and uphold its constitutional mandate. The party dismissed reports of internal crisis as misinformation designed to undermine its credibility.
The ADC's claim that the federal government is pressuring INEC to dismantle its leadership after Kwankwaso's exit suggests political defections now come with institutional consequences. Mahmood Yakubu's office is again at the centre of allegations linking electoral decisions to executive influence. If INEC yields to pressure, it erodes the autonomy voters rely on during party shifts. For Nigerian opposition parties, survival may depend less on membership than on avoiding political crosshairs.
