Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has hailed the recent national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a clear signal that the party is alive and kicking. The convention, organised by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike-led faction of the party, saw the election of a new National Working Committee (NWC).
Saraki, who was a key speaker at the event, urged the newly elected NWC to prioritise a transparent candidate selection process and a robust membership registration exercise. He emphasised the need for the party to rebuild trust and close ranks, prioritising party interests over personal ambitions.
The former Senate President also commended the Convention Planning Committee, chaired by Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for their roles in organising the event.
The PDP's recent national convention is a clear indication that the party is determined to regain its footing in Nigerian politics. However, the party's ability to present a credible alternative to Nigerians will depend on its ability to implement a transparent candidate selection process and a robust membership registration exercise. The party's emphasis on unity and reconciliation is a welcome development, but it remains to be seen whether this will translate into tangible action. As Saraki noted, the party's survival is not just about its partisan interests, but about its role in promoting democracy in Nigeria. The PDP's commitment to rebuilding trust and closing ranks is a crucial step towards regaining the trust of Nigerians. However, this will require more than just words – it will require concrete actions that demonstrate the party's commitment to transparency and accountability.
