The Visitation Panel for Bayelsa State Tertiary Institutions has recommended the creation of a Ministry of Higher Education in the state. Governor Douye Diri inaugurated the panel in May 2025 to assess the operations and challenges facing tertiary institutions in Bayelsa. Its chairman, Dr Oyovwin Osusu, presented the report containing the proposal on Wednesday at Government House in Yenagoa. The panel also identified gaps in funding, infrastructure, and academic standards across the institutions reviewed. No timeline was given for when the governor might act on the recommendation.
Creating a separate ministry for higher education would mark a structural shift in how Bayelsa manages its tertiary institutions, a move previously unseen under Governor Douye Diri's administration. Dr Oyovwin Osusu's panel has effectively placed the state's academic future at the centre of governance, not just policy rhetoric. If implemented, the change could streamline funding and oversight, but without new money, it may only add bureaucracy. For students and faculty, the real test lies in whether this leads to better classrooms, not just another office in Yenagoa.
