Gunmen killed traditional ruler Josephat Ikegwu in Ebonyi State on Wednesday night. The monarch was shot through his bedroom window while resting with his wife at their residence in Ishinkwo Community, Onicha Local Government Area. Community sources said the attack occurred around 10 p.m. when armed men forced entry and fired at the ruler. Ikegwu died on the spot while his wife escaped unharmed.
Onicha Local Government Chairperson Ikechukwu Ogbuofia confirmed the killing to PREMIUM TIMES, describing the attackers as hoodlums who shot through the window. Ebonyi State Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu, a superintendent of police, said officers have opened an investigation. "We have received a report of the incident, and the police have launched an investigation with a view to apprehending and prosecuting all those involved," Ukandu stated.
This marks the second traditional ruler killed in Ebonyi in a month. Last month, gunmen abducted and later murdered Francis Igwe, traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike in Ikwo Local Government Area. Police later arrested nine suspects in connection with Igwe's death.
Ebonyi's security crisis now claims its second traditional ruler in a month, proving armed gangs operate with near-total impunity. Ikechukwu Ogbuofia's confirmation of the attack through a bedroom window exposes how exposed rural leaders remain, even in their own homes. The arrest of nine suspects in the previous killing changes nothing if the cycle of violence continues unchecked.
