President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Shu'aib Aliyu as the new Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), replacing Ahmed Aminu, who resigned to contest the 2027 Adamawa State governorship election. The appointment was confirmed by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga in a statement issued on Thursday. At the same time, Tinubu renewed the tenure of Sule Abdulaziz as Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). Both appointments take immediate effect.

Energy expert and professor emeritus Wumi Iledare described the moves as a strategic blend of reform and continuity in Nigeria's energy sector. He said Aliyu's appointment signals a shift from PTDF's traditional focus on scholarships to a stronger emphasis on human capital development, research, and innovation. "At PTDF, bringing in Prof. Aliyu points to a shift from routine scholarship funding to a more strategic focus on human capital, research, and innovation—which Nigeria urgently needs to stay competitive," Iledare stated. On TCN, he noted that Abdulaziz's renewal reflects the need for stability in tackling persistent transmission challenges. "Transmission remains the bottleneck in the power sector, so steady leadership is critical for grid stability and expansion," he added. Iledare stressed that while the appointments show intent, actual results will depend on execution. "Execution—not intention—will determine the real impact," he said.

💡 NaijaBuzz Take

Appointing a professor to lead PTDF while keeping the TCN boss suggests Tinubu is betting on expertise and stability, not political patronage. The real test lies in whether Aliyu can pivot PTDF from cheque-book scholarship distribution to tangible research outcomes. With transmission still crippling Nigeria's power supply, Abdulaziz's extended tenure offers a chance to fix what past leaders failed to. But as Iledare noted, effort without results is just noise—Nigerians need electricity, not just appointments.
