The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has taken a significant step in combating vandalism on its tracks. On Thursday, March 26, 2026, security personnel from Multi Eye Security Services attached to Mobolaji Johnson Train Station (MJS), Ebute-Metta, arrested a 32-year-old suspect, Bashiru Hafeez, for allegedly removing critical rail fasteners from the narrow-gauge corridor at Alagomeji in Lagos.
The suspect was caught in possession of 15 pandrol clips, which are essential for track stability. The removal of these components poses serious safety risks, including the potential for derailment. The NRC Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr Kayode Opeifa, has reiterated the Corporation's zero tolerance for vandalism, describing such acts as economic sabotage capable of endangering lives and undermining national infrastructure.
Following his arrest, the suspect was handed over to the Nigerian Railway Police Command for investigation and prosecution. He was subsequently arraigned before a competent court in Lagos and remanded in custody at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, pending further hearing. The case has been adjourned to April 24, 2026.
The NRC's swift action against track vandalism is a welcome development, particularly given the potential consequences of such crimes. The arrest of Bashiru Hafeez and the Corporation's commitment to intensifying efforts to identify and prosecute vandals send a strong message that the law will not be taken lightly. This is a critical step in protecting the nation's infrastructure and ensuring safe rail operations. The NRC's zero tolerance policy should be a benchmark for other institutions to follow. By taking a firm stance against vandalism, the NRC is upholding its responsibility to the public and upholding the integrity of the nation's rail network.
