Canada to Impose Higher Immigration Fees in April
Canada is set to increase fees for permanent residence applications starting from April 30, 2026. The move is part of the country's efforts to manage population growth and reduce pressure on public services. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced the fee increase, citing the need to keep up with rising costs and growing demand for immigration services.
The fee hike will affect various types of applicants, including those applying through family sponsorship, business immigration, and humanitarian programmes. The increases range from $15 to $85, depending on the category. For instance, the Right of Permanent Residence Fee will increase from $575 to $600 for main applicants and their spouses or partners.
The fee changes also apply to economic programmes, family sponsorship, and business immigration. Under family sponsorship, the sponsorship fee will increase from $85 to $90, while the main applicant fee will rise from $545 to $570. For business immigration, main applicants will now pay $1,895, up from $1,810.
Canada Processed Over 393,500 Permanent Residents in 2025
Canada remains a top destination for immigrants worldwide. In 2025, about 393,500 people became permanent residents. However, the country is also trying to slow population growth slightly to reduce pressure on housing and public services.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada's decision to raise fees for permanent residence applications will undoubtedly make it more expensive for Nigerians planning to move to Canada. The fee increase will affect various categories of applicants, including family sponsorship and business immigration. This development will likely deter some individuals from pursuing their immigration dreams, highlighting the need for potential migrants to plan carefully and prepare for the additional costs.
