Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has received the Outstanding Governor of the Year award at the 2024 Nigeria Leadership Awards. The recognition was presented in Abuja during a ceremony that highlighted leadership achievements across various sectors. The organisers cited improvements in public sector management and efforts to stabilise the state's economy as key factors in Lawal's selection. Since taking office in May 2023, Lawal has prioritised the resumption of abandoned infrastructure projects and the payment of worker salaries in arrears. He dedicated the award to the people of Zamfara, stating, "This is not my award alone, but a recognition of the collective resilience of our people." The Nigeria Leadership Awards, in its fifth edition, recognises individuals and institutions demonstrating excellence in governance, education, and public service.
Winning an award a year after taking office does not reflect the scale of hardship still faced by many in Zamfara. Dauda Lawal's recognition is based on early administrative moves, not transformed lives. For residents still grappling with insecurity and poor infrastructure, the award matters little unless matched with sustained delivery. Symbolic wins don't pay salaries, fix roads, or stop bandit attacks.
