Dr Bala Maijama'a Wunti, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has formally entered the race for the 2027 Bauchi State governorship. He announced his candidacy on Friday during a visit to the APC secretariat in Bauchi Local Government Area, his first official engagement with the party at the local and state levels. Wunti attributed his decision to contest to sustained pressure from supporters and stakeholders who believe he can deliver transformative leadership. He emphasized youth unemployment as a critical issue, stating, "Allah knows, I only accepted to contest because of the pressure mounted on me to help rescue the future of our unemployed youth and safeguard the next generation."
Wunti pledged allegiance to the APC and outlined a vision for inclusive governance, equal opportunities, and sustainable development if elected. The Bala Wunti Movement, led by Rt. Hon. Yahaya Mohammed Miya, facilitated the visit to introduce Wunti to party functionaries. Alhaji Biyali, Chairman of the APC in Bauchi Local Government, welcomed Wunti, describing him as a dedicated grassroots leader with a proven track record in mentorship and human capital development. Biyali assured all aspiring candidates of fairness in the party's primary process.
A late entry into the gubernatorial race does not automatically translate into momentum, and Dr Bala Maijama'a Wunti's declaration hinges more on perceived public pressure than proven political structure. While his focus on youth unemployment resonates in a state where many young people lack opportunities, goodwill alone cannot build roads or create jobs. His claim of being pushed by supporters may reflect genuine groundswell or simply mirror the common script of aspirants seeking relevance. Without a clear funding plan or party machinery yet visible, Wunti's promise of inclusive development remains a pledge in search of a strategy.
