FG Must Save Nigerian Worker From Current Shock — Ajaero
FG Must Step In to Save Nigerian Workers from Economic Shock
The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has sounded the alarm on the plight of millions of Nigerian workers struggling to cope with the rising cost of living. The current global capitalist crisis, sparked by the military escalation between the US, Israel, and Iran, has sent shockwaves through the global oil markets, causing petrol prices in Nigeria to skyrocket.
Ajaero argues that the situation is a direct attack on the Nigerian people, who are bearing the brunt of the crisis despite not being responsible for it. He emphasizes that the country's refusal to ensure the operationalization of its public refineries has left the downstream sector vulnerable to global market volatility.
The recent price adjustment by the Dangote Refinery, which has tied its prices to global fluctuations, has further exacerbated the problem. Ajaero sees this as a betrayal of the promise to meet domestic demand, as the country remains dependent on a market-driven pricing structure.
The NLC leader warns that the current situation is a wake-up call for the government to take immediate action to halt the vandalism of public assets and bring the Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries back on stream. He argues that this is not a favour, but a right of the Nigerian people to cushion themselves from a hostile global order.
The rising cost of petrol and diesel has made transportation a significant burden for workers, who are struggling to make ends meet due to food inflation and meager wages. Ajaero's message is clear: when workers cannot afford to go to work, the economy grinds to a halt.
In the context of Nigeria's current economic realities, the situation is particularly dire. The country's reliance on imported petroleum products, coupled with the volatility of global oil markets, has left many workers at the mercy of economic forces beyond their control. The government's inaction has led to a situation where the working class is bearing the brunt of the crisis, rather than those who are responsible for it.
The NLC's call to action is clear: the Federal Government must intervene to save Nigerian workers from the current economic shock. By bringing the public refineries back on stream and taking steps to stabilize the downstream sector, the government can help cushion the impact of the global crisis on the Nigerian people.
