**Naija News: Village Head Cries Foul as Military Invasion Leaves Over 200 Families Displaced in Cross River State**
In the heart of Cross River State, specifically in the Obubra Local Government Area, a sense of unease has settled over the Odonget community. The village head, Chief Richard Ahim Ayan, has accused the military of invading his community, leaving families scattered and many residents missing. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of last Thursday, has sparked outrage among community leaders and residents.
According to eyewitnesses, soldiers from the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army stormed the community in response to a dispute between community vigilantes and illegal miners operating in the area. The vigilantes had reportedly asked the miners to pay N1,000 each to transport their mined stones through the village, a move that didn't sit well with the miners. The resulting conflict led to the military invasion, resulting in the destruction of over 50 houses, including the village head's residence.
The situation is dire, with community sources alleging that some villagers were killed, others arrested, while over 200 women, elderly persons, and children fled the area for safety. A youth leader, Amos Agim, who is currently taking refuge in the nearby Iyamoyom community, estimates that over 500 armed soldiers are occupying the village, leaving it deserted.
In response to these allegations, the Nigerian Army has denied claims of widespread killings, stating that only four civilians and one soldier died during the confrontation. However, the Army has not provided a detailed explanation of the events leading up to the invasion.
The Odonget community is now grappling with the aftermath of this military invasion, which has left many families without homes and a sense of uncertainty hanging over their heads. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this crisis will be resolved and what measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
