**FG Keeps Promise, Awards Houses and Honours to D'Tigress Team**
The Federal Government has kept its word by awarding houses and national honours to the members of Nigeria's women's basketball team, D'Tigress, who made us proud at the 2025 Women's AfroBasket tournament. The team, led by their captain Amy Okonkwo, successfully defended their continental title, and the government has now fulfilled its promise of rewards.
According to the National Sports Commission, documents for the houses promised to the players were formally presented to them in Lyon, France, by the Chairman of the commission, Shehu Dikko, and its Director General, Bukola Olopade. This is a follow-up to President Bola Tinubu's announcement on August 4, 2025, where he pledged $100,000 to each player and $50,000 to every member of the coaching and technical crew.
As part of the reward package, the president approved a three-bedroom flat for each member of the team at the Renewed Hope Estate. The players also received the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger, a prestigious recognition of their achievement. The list of recipients includes Amy Okonkwo, Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpannah, Elizabeth Balogun, Sarah Ogoke, Ifunanya Okoro, Promise Amukamara, Murjanatu Musa, Blessing Ejiofor, Ezinne Kalu, Victoria Macaulay, and Nicole Enabosi.
The backroom staff who were also honoured include head coach Rena Wakama and assistant coaches Wani Muganguzi and Prince Ezeala. Team captain Amy Okonkwo expressed her gratitude to the government officials and Nigerians for their support, reaffirming the squad's commitment to representing the country with pride.
This is a great moment for Nigerian sports, and we are proud of our D'Tigress team for their outstanding achievement. The government's commitment to rewarding their hard work is a testament to the country's support for its athletes and a motivation for them to continue striving for excellence.
