Suspected armed bandits killed a police officer and two civilians during attacks on the Karadua–Musawa Road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State on Sunday. The victims were traveling in a Volkswagen Golf when the assailants blocked the road and opened fire, killing both occupants. Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, the police spokesperson in Katsina, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday. He said a joint security team comprising police, military personnel, the Katsina State Community Watch Corps, and local vigilantes responded immediately after a distress call.
The team engaged the attackers and evacuated the victims to a nearby hospital. Later that day, the bandits regrouped and launched a second attack on the Musawa Police Division. Officers repelled the assault after a fierce gun battle, preventing the station from being overrun. One police officer was killed during the exchange of gunfire. Deputy Superintendent of Police Sadiq-Aliyu said the officer died while defending the station.
Commissioner of Police Ali Umar-Fage confirmed the deployment of additional operational assets to the area. He ordered a full-scale investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. Mr Umar-Fage described the slain officer as a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in service. He extended condolences to the families of the deceased and urged residents to provide credible information to aid ongoing efforts.
A police officer died defending the Musawa station after bandits killed two civilians earlier the same day. The coordinated response involving military and vigilantes shows the reliance on hybrid security models in high-risk zones. When a deputy superintendent is among the dead, it signals how deeply frontline forces are stretched in Katsina. Nigerians in such areas are effectively living on the frontlines of a security crisis with no end in sight.
