Gunmen Attack Sterling Facility in Akwa Ibom, Troops Respond with Force.
A violent confrontation erupted in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State, when troops of the 2 Brigade clashed with youths who attempted to free a suspect linked to stolen diesel from Sterling Petroleum and Fertilizer Limited Company. The suspect was being taken to the facility for interrogation when the youths blocked the road, leading to a confrontation between the two groups. The situation escalated when the youths became violent, hurling bottles and stones at the troops.
Captain Lawal Bala Muhammad, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, stated that the troops fired warning shots in an attempt to disperse the crowd, but the youths continued to resist. In a last resort, the ring leader was shot in the leg, and the situation was eventually brought under control. The troops were later reinforced, and the area was secured.
The confrontation led to the discovery of a dead body, which was found beside a coffin in the area. The remains were evacuated to the mortuary by the Nigeria Police Force, assisted by troops from the 2 Brigade. The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region.
