Ikot Abasi Clashes: Nigerian Army Troops Clash with Youths Over Diesel Theft Suspect
A violent confrontation erupted in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State, when Nigerian Army troops clashed with youths who attempted to free a suspect linked to alleged diesel theft from Sterling Petroleum and Fertiliser Limited. The suspect was being taken to the company's facility for interrogation when the youths blocked the road and became violent, throwing bottles and stones at the troops.
According to Captain Lawal Bala Muhammad, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 2 Brigade, the soldiers responded by dispersing the crowd. In the process, a youth leader was shot in the leg and taken to the hospital for treatment. The situation escalated further as the youths allegedly vandalised vehicles, harassed commuters, and attacked company trucks along the route.
Reinforcements were subsequently deployed, restoring order and securing the area. A follow-up operation revealed an unidentified corpse beside a coffin, which was evacuated to a mortuary by the police, supported by the troops. The Army stated that operations are ongoing to maintain security and protect the company's assets.
