Wema Bank received two awards at the Global SME Banking Innovation Awards 2026, held on March 12, 2026. The bank was named SME Financier of the Year and won Best SME Lending Product – Digital Bank for its MSME Instant Loan. The awards recognise financial institutions that demonstrate innovation and measurable impact in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises globally. The MSME Instant Loan allows eligible business owners to access financing digitally without collateral, with prequalification and disbursement completed within minutes.

Moruf Oseni, managing director/CEO of Wema Bank, said the awards reflect the bank's commitment to supporting entrepreneurs and strengthening Nigeria's SME sector. He stated that small and medium-sized businesses are central to economic growth through job creation and innovation. Oseni noted that Wema Bank has built an ecosystem that offers more than traditional banking, including digital platforms, advisory services, and market access. Tunde Mabawonku, executive director, Retail and Digital Banking, highlighted the role of technology in breaking down credit barriers and expanding financial inclusion. The bank's ALAT platform and SARA by Wema initiative, aimed at female entrepreneurs, also form part of its broader SME support strategy.

Winning international awards is one thing, but the real test lies in how many small business owners in Lagos, Kano or Uyo can actually access these digital loans without hitches. Moruf Oseni's vision of an inclusive ecosystem sounds strong on paper, yet millions of Nigerian entrepreneurs still operate outside formal finance. If Wema Bank's digital model truly works, it should show up in rising SME survival rates, not just award cabinets. For now, the gap between innovation and everyday access remains wide.
