Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, formerly known as the University of Abuja, will confer an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree on Professor Yusuf Olaolu Ali (SAN), the First Kuliya of Ilorin Emirate. The decision was approved during the university's 83rd extraordinary Governing Council meeting, following a recommendation from the senate. The honour recognises Professor Ali's distinguished contributions to the legal profession and national development. Vice Chancellor Professor Hakeem B. Fawehinmi formally extended the invitation in an official statement on behalf of the council, senate, management, staff and students.
The award will be presented at the university's combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremony on Saturday, April 18. The event is expected to draw dignitaries from across Nigeria. Professor Ali, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Professor of Law Practice and principal partner at Ghalib Chambers, is celebrated for his legal expertise, academic leadership and philanthropy. The ceremony will also include the conferment of degrees, diplomas and prizes on graduating students, alongside other honorary awards.
Honouring a legal heavyweight like Yusuf Olaolu Ali does not shift the reality that most Nigerian universities still struggle with funding, infrastructure and academic relevance. The same ceremony celebrating excellence will occur in a system where many law graduates cannot secure pupillage or judicial appointments. Symbolic recognition matters, but it cannot substitute for systemic reform in legal and university sectors. This event reflects prestige for one man, not progress for the many.
