Three people were killed and one injured in an attack on Friday at about 7 p.m. in Nyamgo Gyel, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. The victims, identified as Luka Pam, 36; Samuel Davou, 38; and Deme Saidu, 35, were ambushed while returning home from Gero on a motorbike after visiting a mining site. Witnesses said the attack occurred when gunmen opened fire on a group of about 15 youths, causing them to scatter. Dung Davou, a youth leader in Gyel, described the scene as sudden and chaotic. "We started hearing sporadic gunshots, and everyone scattered. Unfortunately, three of our people were killed," he said.
Solomon Dalyop, Chairperson of the Berom Youth Moulder Association, said the victims had gone out to observe Good Friday before being ambushed on their way back. He revealed that community leaders had previously reported suspicious movements in Gero, Rafin Bauna, and Dutsen Kura during a security meeting with Fulani representatives and the military. "We were informed about suspicious movements around Gero, Rafin Bauna, and Dutsen Kura, and we warned our people to be vigilant," he said. Dalyop warned that armed groups are increasingly occupying bush areas across Plateau. Only police responded after the attack, evacuating the injured to a hospital. Attempts to reach Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer Alfred Alabo for official comment were unsuccessful. The incident follows a deadly Palm Sunday attack in Angwan Rukuba that killed dozens and prompted President Bola Tinubu's visit to the state earlier in the week. The president vowed the violence would not recur, yet attacks persist.
President Bola Tinubu said "this will not repeat itself" after visiting Plateau, yet killings in Nyamgo Gyel occurred just days later. His assurance now hangs heavily over communities that see no tangible shift in security presence or outcomes. When attacks follow such high-level promises so quickly, the gap between political speech and ground reality widens beyond credibility. For residents of Plateau, another ambush means another reminder that words alone do not stop bullets.
