State Police: Barau receives IGP’s committee, says Nigerians concerns will be addressed
**Nigeria Inches Closer to Having a State Police System**
In a significant move, the Nigeria Police Force has taken a major step towards establishing a state police system. The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, received a steering committee established by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to develop a framework for the state police system.
The committee, led by Professor Olu Ogunsakin, paid a courtesy call on Senator Barau in Abuja, where they briefed him on their mandate and sought the Senate's advice and contributions to enrich their report. Senator Barau, who chairs the Senate Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution, commended the Inspector-General of Police for working towards a more secure Nigeria, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
Senator Barau tasked the committee to focus on measures to promote accountability, prevent abuse, and embark on an enlightenment drive to inform Nigerians about the benefits of a state police system. He emphasized the need for a robust public safety mechanism that would allay Nigerians' fears and concerns about the system.
The call for state police has been a major topic of discussion in Nigeria, with many Nigerians expressing concerns about the potential for abuse and a lack of transparency. However, proponents of the system argue that it would enhance local law enforcement capabilities and community engagement.
The Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, under Senator Barau's chairmanship, has conducted zonal public hearings in six locations across the country to gather inputs from Nigerians on the proposed amendments to the Constitution, including the one seeking to establish state and community police. The committee's report is expected to provide a framework for the establishment of a state police system that addresses Nigerians' concerns and promotes accountability and transparency.
In the context of Nigeria's security challenges, the establishment of a state police system is seen as a crucial step towards enhancing public safety and security. With the Senate's commitment to ensuring that Nigerians' concerns are addressed, the country is one step closer to having a more effective and accountable policing system.
