ADC to Nigerians: It’s El-Rufai today, it could be you tomorrow
**ADC Warns Nigerians: It Could Happen to You Too**
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed deep concern over the prolonged detention of Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State. El-Rufai, a chieftain of the ADC, has been in custody for over 30 days.
In a statement, ADC described the detention as a grave violation of fundamental human rights, and vowed to take action to ensure his release. They called on the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to uphold the rule of law and release El-Rufai immediately.
El-Rufai was initially invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) 32 days ago, and was released after honouring the invitation. However, two days later, he was taken into custody again by the ICPC. Since then, he has been held without arraignment, formal charges, or access to his family and doctor.
ADC sees this as a clear example of the weaponisation of state institutions against political participation. They argue that detaining a citizen without due process is a hallmark of dictatorship, and has no place in a democratic society like Nigeria.
As Nigerians, we must be aware that this could happen to any of us. ADC is cautioning that the detention of El-Rufai is a stain on the conscience of our democracy, and a dangerous descent into lawlessness by the current government. They are vowing to petition human rights groups, including Amnesty International, if El-Rufai is not released immediately.
This development serves as a reminder that our rights and freedoms are not guaranteed, and can be taken away at any time. It is a call to action for Nigerians to stand up for their rights and demand accountability from those in power.
In a country where the rule of law is often disregarded, ADC's warning is a timely reminder that we must be vigilant and protect our freedoms. It could happen to you too, so let us stand together to demand justice and protect our democracy.
