Spiro, a leading African electric mobility provider, has launched 1,000 new electric bikes in Ogun State to promote sustainable transport in Nigeria. The fleet was unveiled at Gateway International Airport during an event attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun. The initiative aims to cut carbon emissions, offer affordable alternatives to fuel-powered vehicles, and align with Nigeria's environmental goals.
According to Spiro, the bikes address rising fuel costs by providing a cost-effective mobility solution. Kaushik Burman, the company's CEO, highlighted their economic and environmental benefits, stating they empower Nigerians while protecting the environment. Abiodun emphasized the bikes' role in easing fuel price pressures, supporting energy transition, and improving urban transport. Spiro also expects the project to create jobs, reduce transportation expenses, and ease traffic congestion in Ogun State.
The company's broader strategy includes deploying thousands more electric bikes nationwide, reinforcing its push for cleaner transport across Africa. With over 80,000 electric motorcycles, 2,500 battery swapping stations, and 30 million swaps completed, Spiro has already replaced fossil fuel-based transport with sustainable alternatives.
Kaushik Burman's claim that Spiro's bikes offer a cost-effective solution ignores that the initial purchase price of electric bikes remains far higher than used petrol motorcycles. This means only those with steady incomes can afford the shift, leaving most Nigerians stuck with expensive fuel.
