The redesigned 200, 500, and 1000 Naira notes were printed in Nigeria, not abroad, as directed by former President Muhammadu Buhari, a prosecution witness has stated. Chinedu Eneanya, who testified at the ongoing trial of former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele and others in an Abuja High Court, confirmed the local production of the new banknotes. He identified himself as a director in the Ministry of Finance and said the production followed a directive from Buhari to keep the printing within the country. Eneanya stated that the decision was part of efforts to strengthen national sovereignty over currency circulation. The redesigned notes were introduced in late 2022, with the Central Bank announcing a phased withdrawal of old notes in early 2023. The trial continues as the prosecution presents evidence linking the currency redesign to alleged financial misconduct by the accused.
