Desmond Elliot's bid for a fourth term as member representing Surulere Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly has drawn opposition from a coalition of local stakeholders. The Surulere Accountability Forum, in a statement issued Wednesday in Lagos, criticised Elliot's performance across his three previous terms, citing minimal constituency projects and limited legislative impact. Spokesman Mr Olanrewaju Badmus said the group's position emerged from a collective assessment by community leaders, youth groups, small-business representatives and civil society organisations. They found Elliot's tenure marked by stagnation, lack of policy innovation and insufficient response to key issues like infrastructure decay, youth unemployment and primary healthcare.
Badmus stated the coalition was not opposed to Elliot on personal grounds but believed three terms without measurable progress warranted a leadership change. He dismissed claims that the group's stance was reactionary or influenced by recent political developments. The forum advocated for new candidates with fresh energy and ideas, stressing that leadership should be accountable and reflective of the people's evolving needs. They called on residents to support democratic participation and ensure representation that prioritises the constituency's development.
A public reckoning over three unremarkable terms is long overdue for Desmond Elliot. When community leaders, youth groups and civil society jointly question a lawmaker's output, it signals more than discontent—it reveals a trust deficit. For Surulere residents, this means another term for Elliot would likely extend the status quo, not reverse it. A call for new faces is not just political noise; it reflects exhausted patience.
