A 60-year-old man in Kazaure Local Government Area of Jigawa State died after being set on fire by his 27-year-old son, Kabiru Nuhu. The incident occurred in the early hours of April 1, 2026, at Lokon Malamai, via Magama Quarters in Kazaure town. According to Police Public Relations Officer SP Shiisu Lawan Adam, officers responded to a distress call at about 6:30 a.m. and found the victim with severe burns. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and later referred to a higher facility, where he died during treatment.
Investigations revealed that Kabiru Nuhu allegedly poured a flammable substance, believed to be petrol, on his father before setting him ablaze. The suspect was found with fresh burn injuries on his forehead, arms, and toes. He has been arrested and is in police custody. He is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for further questioning. SP Adam confirmed that the police have begun a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Commissioner of Police Haruna Alaba Yahaya described the act as heinous and unacceptable. He pledged that justice would be served and urged the public to report domestic disputes to security agencies. Authorities have called for calm as the investigation continues.
A son accused of burning his own father to death raises disturbing questions about the breakdown of family and mental health support systems in rural communities. Kabiru Nuhu's reported burn injuries suggest the act may have been impulsive rather than premeditated, pointing to possible psychological distress. If untreated mental health issues played a role, this case exposes how gaps in community care can escalate private anguish into public horror. For many in similar rural settings, access to mental health services remains virtually nonexistent.
