Director-general of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Abubakar Sulaiman, has called on Christians to pray for national unity and peace as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections. His appeal was made in a statement released on Saturday in Abuja by his Media Adviser, Mohammad Abdulkadri. Sulaiman highlighted the spiritual importance of Easter, describing it as a symbol of the victory of light over darkness and life over death through the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He encouraged Christians to reflect on the sacrifices of Jesus and to promote values such as peace, security, fairness and charity in society. Christians were urged to offer special prayers for the country's peace, progress and prosperity before, during and after the 2027 elections. Sulaiman extended warm wishes for a peaceful and joyful Easter celebration.
A public official invoking prayer ahead of an election is not a policy. Abubakar Sulaiman's Easter message offers spiritual counsel, not a plan for electoral integrity. For Nigerians, this reinforces the troubling norm of relying on faith when concrete institutional reforms are overdue. Prayers may comfort, but they don't prevent vote-rigging or fix broken systems.
