The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) are working more closely to finalise a revised Higher National Diploma (HND) curriculum focused on public health. The update aims to align training in environmental health with current industry demands and national health priorities. Dr Oladipupo Bello, Director of Curriculum Development at NBTE, made the announcement during a critique workshop for the HND curriculum in food safety and public health held in Abuja. He stated that the revised curriculum would produce graduates equipped to tackle emerging public health issues. Representatives from tertiary institutions, regulatory bodies, and public health experts attended the workshop to review course content and recommend improvements. The collaboration seeks to strengthen the role of technical education in improving environmental health outcomes across Nigeria.

Dr Oladipupo Bello's push for an industry-relevant HND curriculum reveals how far behind Nigeria's technical training has fallen. If graduates from environmental health programmes have lacked real-world readiness until now, years of public health gaps may be partly traced to outdated classroom content. This revision, years in the making, suggests reform is possible when institutions collaborate with professional councils. Whether it translates to cleaner markets, safer food inspections, and better health outcomes depends on how strictly the new standard is implemented nationwide.
