The Katsina chapter of the New Nigerian People's Party (NNPP) has instructed all its members to register with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). State party secretary Tijjani Kafinsoli disclosed the directive in Katsina on Wednesday, stating it came from the NNPP national headquarters. The move follows the decision of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, national leader of the NNPP and former governor of Kano State, to join the ADC in preparation for the 2027 elections. Kafinsoli said the state chairman, Armaya'u Abdulkadir, communicated the directive after consultations at the national level.
Executive members and office holders in the NNPP are expected to remain in their positions unless they choose to exit for personal political reasons. Kafinsoli emphasized that party officials from ward to state levels should not individually defect to the ADC, as the transition will be collective. He urged ordinary NNPP members without official roles to promptly obtain ADC membership cards and link them to their voter cards. According to Kafinsoli, talks are ongoing between the NNPP and ADC to establish a unified party structure ahead of the next general elections.
Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso's shift to the ADC signals another realignment driven by individual political strategy rather than grassroots momentum. The directive for NNPP members in Katsina to register en masse with ADC shows how party structures in Nigeria often serve as vehicles for leadership decisions, not ideological movements. For voters, this means party affiliations on the ballot may change while the central figures remain the same.
