President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's ongoing reforms in the Nigeria Police Force are making the service more attractive, according to retired Deputy Inspector General Taiwo Lakanu, a member of the Police Service Commission. Speaking Wednesday during an assessment tour of the state police command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Lakanu described the current period as the best time to join the police. He attributed this to sweeping reforms and a federal government directive to recruit 50,000 additional personnel into the force.
Lakanu emphasized that qualified Nigerians should take advantage of the recruitment exercise, highlighting improved welfare packages, better salary structures, and opportunities for professional development. He encouraged young people to view policing as a viable and rewarding career path. The nationwide recruitment drive forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the capacity and public image of the Nigeria Police Force.
Taiwo Lakanu's praise for Tinubu's police reforms rings hollow when many officers still lack basic equipment and live on allowances that don't match inflation. Promising salaries and career growth means little if recruitment favours connections over competence. For the average Nigerian, a better police force remains more slogan than reality.
