Imo State police operatives from the Orji Police Division, in collaboration with the Anti-Narcotics Unit, arrested a suspected armed robber on April 2, 2026. The arrest occurred at around 0600 hours at the Bishop's Court axis near Pacific Hotel in Owerri, following credible intelligence. The suspect, Chigaemezu Aguguom, a native of Umuneke in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, was apprehended with gunshot wounds sustained during a failed criminal operation.
According to DSP Henry Okoye, the police spokesperson, the suspect confessed during interrogation to being part of a five-man armed robbery gang. He provided information that is now being used to track down other members of the group who are still at large. Recovered from the suspect were two locally fabricated firearms, five live cartridges, four smartphones, a wristwatch, and other suspected stolen items.
Chigaemezu Aguguom and the recovered exhibits have been moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Owerri for further investigation and possible prosecution.
A suspect caught mid-operation with fresh gunshot wounds suggests police may have interrupted a crime in progress, not just followed a trail. Chigaemezu Aguguom's immediate confession and the recovery of weapons and stolen goods point to a level of operational readiness in Orji Division that is rarely documented. This arrest, while limited in scope, shows that coordinated police action can yield tangible results when intelligence is acted upon swiftly. For Nigerians, it offers a rare glimpse of law enforcement functioning as intended, even if only in one location and for one case.
