Fears of violence have gripped the Yelwata community in Benue State after a fresh attack by suspected armed herdsmen left two residents injured. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when the attackers, accompanied by their cattle, confronted security operatives stationed in the community.
The attack has heightened fears among residents who are still recovering from a previous deadly assault on June 13, 2025, which resulted in the reported killing of over 200 people. Many survivors were forced to take refuge in Internally Displaced Persons camps.
A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the events leading up to the attack. According to him, security operatives attempted to stop the fleeing suspects after they opened fire while retreating. Two people were hit in the process, with one sustaining a gunshot wound to the hand and the other being shot in the leg.
Both victims were evacuated by the Benue State Emergency Management Agency to Makurdi for further medical attention. The community leader expressed concern that the renewed violence could disrupt farming activities and discourage residents from accessing their farmlands.
The latest attack comes barely days after the state government distributed improved agricultural inputs to farmers in the area to boost food production during the planting season.
