FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has requested collaboration with Finland on waste management, agriculture, and infrastructure development in Abuja. The proposal was made during a meeting with Finland's Ambassador to Nigeria, Sanna Selin, who visited Wike on Tuesday at the FCT headquarters. Wike welcomed the opportunity to strengthen ties, stating, "the FCT Administration will utilise this opportunity to further expand our relationship." He highlighted Finland's strong bilateral record with Nigeria and expressed interest in learning from Finnish cities, particularly in infrastructure and farming. Waste management, he stressed, is "very, very key" for the FCT, and he invited Finnish firms with relevant expertise to engage. He also requested opportunities to study Finnish urban projects for potential adaptation in Abuja. Security and construction improvements in the capital were also discussed, with Wike asserting that Abuja's security situation has "very much improved."
Selin affirmed Finland's commitment to deepening ties, noting recent progress in bilateral relations. She referenced a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding on digitalisation and innovation between Finland and Nigeria. Emphasising Finland's strengths in water and waste technologies, she suggested that Finnish expertise, particularly from its capital region, could support practical projects in the FCT.
Nyesom Wike is once again positioning Abuja as a hub for foreign technical partnerships, this time leveraging Finland's waste and digital expertise. While Finland's advanced systems offer credible models, the real test lies in whether the FCT Administration can move beyond invitations and site visits to actual implementation. Given the persistent waste challenges in areas like Kubwa and Gwarinpa, talk of "mutual development" will mean little without measurable action on the ground.
