Students of Divine Touch International School in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, have created fashion designs from waste materials as part of an environmental awareness initiative. The event, called the 'Trashion Event Competition', was held on Friday at the school premises with support from the Triple Green Environmental Development Foundation (TGED). Pupils modelled outfits made from discarded plastics, old newspapers, sachet water wrappers, and used fabrics, transforming them into creative and wearable art. The school's principal, Mrs. Yetunde Akinola, stated that the project aimed to "encourage environmental consciousness and promote sustainable practices among young learners." TGED coordinator, Mr. Tunde Oyekan, praised the students' ingenuity and urged parents and communities to support eco-friendly innovations in schools. The competition also included speeches on waste reduction and live demonstrations on recycling techniques.
A school in Ekiti is doing more for environmental sustainability than most government agencies achieve in a year. With creativity and limited resources, students and teachers have demonstrated how waste can be reimagined, not just discarded. Mrs. Yetunde Akinola and TGED's Mr. Tunde Oyekan have set a benchmark for practical environmental education in Nigeria's school system. If replicated, such initiatives could shift public behaviour on waste far more effectively than policy statements.
