A High Court in Abuja has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Senator Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, the factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party. The warrant was issued on Thursday after Turaki failed to appear in court to face a one-count criminal charge filed by the Inspector General of Police. The charge, which was served to Turaki, alleges that he gave false information to the police in October 2022.
Turaki's absence from court led to a disruption in proceedings, prompting the prosecution to request the issuance of a bench warrant. The court, presided over by Justice Peter Kekemeke, ruled that Turaki's failure to appear without a valid reason was improper. The judge further clarified that the motion to quash the charge was not yet ripe for hearing, and that such a motion can only be entertained after the defendant has entered his plea.
The bench warrant is aimed at ensuring the proper administration of justice and compelling Turaki's attendance in court. The matter has been adjourned to April 22 for his arraignment.
The court's decision to issue a bench warrant for Senator Kabiru Tanimu Turaki's arrest is a clear indication that the judiciary will not tolerate disrespect for its processes. The fact that Turaki failed to appear in court despite being served with a hearing notice is a serious breach of the law. This move by the court sends a strong signal that no one is above the law, and that those who disregard court orders will face the consequences. The Peoples Democratic Party must now take responsibility for its factional chairman's actions and ensure that he appears in court to face the pending charge. This is a critical test for the PDP's commitment to upholding the rule of law and respecting the judiciary's authority.
