Chelsea manager Paulo Rosenior has dropped midfielder Enzo Fernandez from the squad following comments the player made about a potential future at Real Madrid. Fernandez, who joined Chelsea for a club-record £106.8 million in January 2023, stated in a recent interview that he would "like to live in Spain" and described Madrid as reminiscent of his hometown, Buenos Aires. Although he previously insisted there had been "no talks" with Real Madrid and reaffirmed his focus on Chelsea, the latest remarks prompted Rosenior to take disciplinary action. "It's not ideal," Rosenior said, linking the comments to a challenging period for the team.
The decision comes after Chelsea lost four consecutive matches between 11 and 21 March, including an 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris St-Germain in the Champions League last-16. Defender Marc Cucurella also drew scrutiny for suggesting a possible return to Barcelona, though he later clarified he was "happy" at Chelsea and would prefer to wait "few years" before any move. Rosenior revealed he spent 30 minutes speaking with Cucurella and believes the Spain international is "fully committed." Despite the setbacks, Chelsea have won 10 of their 19 games under Rosenior, who took charge in January, and currently sit sixth in the Premier League, six points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.
When Fernandez says he'd "like to live in Spain," it signals more than nostalgia — it reveals a player already mentally disengaging from Chelsea's season. For a club investing over £100 million in him, public musings about a rival league during a tight top-four race undermine team stability.
