The Canadian Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Carlos Rojas-Arbulu, has reaffirmed his country's commitment to strengthening economic and cultural ties with Nigeria. This commitment was reaffirmed during a high-level meeting with Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, at Nvosi in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
The meeting, which was represented by Canada's Trade Commissioner and Second Secretary, Delane Boakye, identified Aviation, Energy, particularly Clean Energy, and Education as priority areas for collaboration. According to Boakye, Nigeria remains the second-largest source of international students to Canada, with over 17,000 Nigerian students in the country.
Boakye also highlighted Canada's global expertise in aircraft development and training, as well as its strong agricultural base, as priority areas for collaboration. The Canadian Trade Commissioner described Nigerians as "very dynamic, hard-working individuals with a strong entrepreneurial spirit," emphasizing her mandate to promote investment opportunities in Nigeria and foster closer bilateral cooperation.
The Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, thanked the Canadian Deputy High Commissioner for choosing Abia State as the first state to visit. Governor Otti described the State's human capital as its most valuable asset, highlighting its strength in education and industry. He assured that the State is ready for collaboration, particularly in renewable energy, Aviation, Agriculture, and Education, as part of efforts to accelerate economic growth and industrial development.
The Canadian government's renewed commitment to strengthening ties with Abia State is a welcome development, particularly in the areas of Aviation, Energy, and Education. Governor Otti's emphasis on human capital as the State's most valuable asset is a testament to the potential for collaboration. However, the State's readiness for partnerships in renewable energy, Aviation, and Agriculture must be matched with tangible investments and infrastructure development. The construction of an international-standard airport in partnership with the Federal Government is a significant step in this direction. As Nigeria looks to diversify its economy, the partnership between Abia State and Canada has the potential to create jobs and stimulate economic growth.
