The Nigerian government has taken a significant step to ensure a smooth APC convention in Abuja. The Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation has ordered all workers in the Federal Capital Territory to work from home on Friday, March 27, due to road closures around the Federal Secretariat Complex.
The roads leading to and around the complex will be closed from March 27 to March 28, 2026, as Eagle Square, the venue for the APC convention, is adjacent to the complex. The directive affects civil servants whose offices are located within Phases I, II, and III of the Federal Secretariat Complex and those at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the circular issued by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, the road closure is necessary to ease movement restrictions around the area. The circular was signed by Dr. Abdul S. U. Garba, Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare Office in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
The directive was issued to Permanent Secretaries and heads of agencies operating within the affected phases of the complex, urging them to notify their staff and ensure strict compliance with the directive.
The APC convention is set to take place in Abuja, and the Nigerian government is taking no chances to ensure a smooth event. The decision to close roads and direct civil servants to work from home is a clear indication of the government's commitment to hosting a successful convention. However, this move raises concerns about the impact on daily life for residents and workers in the affected areas. The road closures and remote work orders will undoubtedly cause inconvenience to many, and it is essential that the government takes steps to mitigate these effects. The APC convention is a significant event, but it should not come at the expense of the daily lives of Nigerians.
