Brigadier General Lawal Bature Mohammed, a former Commander of Zamfara Community Protection Guards, has passed away. He was shot by bandits in an ambush last year and later flown to Egypt for medical treatment.

The late general's death comes after he suffered serious injuries from the bandits' attack. His successor, former AIG Muhammad Shehu Daligent, was appointed while he was recovering in Egypt.

Governor Dauda Lawal had recently decorated 20 Community Protection Guards who performed exceptionally well in their duties, a gesture that included the relations of the late CPG heroes. The funeral prayer for the late commander was held in the sabon gari area of Gusau, the state capital, on Thursday evening.

He was buried according to Islamic rites.

The sudden death of Brigadier General Lawal Bature Mohammed is a stark reminder of the risks faced by those who have dedicated themselves to protecting communities in Zamfara. Governor Dauda Lawal's gesture of decorating the relations of fallen CPG heroes is commendable, but it is imperative that the government provides adequate support to the families of these fallen heroes. The state government should also ensure that the Community Protection Guards have the necessary resources to carry out their duties effectively. The loss of General Mohammed is a blow to the people of Zamfara, who are already grappling with the challenges of insecurity. The government must do more to address the root causes of this insecurity and provide relief to those affected.
