The Enugu State Government and the United Kingdom have collaborated to introduce an AI-enabled smart metering system to combat energy theft and reduce revenue losses in the power sector. The pilot programme, funded by the UK International Development and implemented by Tetra Tech, brought together key stakeholders to explore opportunities for expanding smart metering and improving electricity access in Enugu State. The project aims to address persistent challenges such as revenue leakages, energy theft, and poor billing efficiency in the power sector.

A pilot scheme involving the deployment of 846 smart meters had already been carried out in the Ugwuaji axis of the state capital, covering surrounding semi-urban communities. The technology enables full tracking of electricity consumption from transformers to individual households, allowing for the reduction of commercial and collection losses. This initiative also opens opportunities for private investors and energy retail companies to participate in Enugu's electricity market, particularly in underserved areas.

Market prices for meters stand at approximately N130,000 for single-phase units and about N230,000 for three-phase units, with flexible payment structures available to ease adoption. The project has shown encouraging results, including significant improvements in revenue recovery and reduction in losses.

💡 NaijaBuzz Take

The Enugu State Government's decision to partner with the UK in introducing smart meters is a welcome step towards addressing the persistent challenges in the power sector. The use of AI-enabled meters will not only reduce revenue losses but also empower consumers to monitor their consumption and help operators detect faults or irregularities. This initiative has the potential to attract private investors and energy retail companies to participate in Enugu's electricity market, particularly in underserved areas. With market prices for meters at approximately N130,000 for single-phase units, the cost is relatively affordable for many households. The success of this pilot project in Enugu State could serve as a model for other states in Nigeria to follow suit.
